SPOILER - Joy as an Act of Resistance Box

Our follow up box to last year's Brexit Survival Box was Joy as an Act of Resistance. It has been A Year.

We don't do Christmas boxes here at Countess Ablaze, or advent calendars. I am completely non-religious so it feels wrong of me to capitalise on religious festivals that I don't celebrate so we get creative and come up with other ideas instead.

These boxes came with one or two skeins of yarn and items carefully chosen to inspire joy, without any Live, Love, Laugh energy.

Joy as an Act of Resistance Yarn

Because we are working in two teams to keep us all a bit safer and navigate any self-isolation that come up, it meant that only one team could dye the yarn so I can report that I dyed all of this one. Pre-Covid it would have been split equally amongst us.

It's the most favourite thing that I've dyed in a long while, something just clicked inside me. I wanted calm and soothing yet also dramatic. I dyed this on Lady Persephone Sock Yarn (75% Bluefaced Leicester and 25% nylon) which is our best-selling yarn base.

The yarn and contents were a surprise to everyone who signed up for a box and we sent out 100 boxes.

I chose a selection of small independent British businesses as it made sense to shop local. Here they are:

Sankofa plaintain chips

Sankofa is the home of traditional munchilicious munchables that represent the EVOLUTION of various African Cultures. Through a little magic, Sankofa plantain chips remind us of the richness in our HERITAGE with every butter, salty, sweet or spicy flavorful CRUNCH we take, and dares us to Think, Laugh, Be Bold, and Grow. Taste the magic!

NEMI Teas Limited

We are a specialist London-based tea company that offers a variety of whole-leaf tea blends both as loose-tea and teabags and a Chai Syrup. We provide employment to refugees to give them local work experience and job readiness skills to enter the UK workforce and help them integrate into broader society. All our teabags are plastic-free, packaging is biodegradable and the teas are Fairtrade-certified.

Cherith Harrison - illustrator of the writing set

Welcome to the home of animal and wildlife inspired gifts, thanks for stopping by! Drawing inspiration from popular wildlife and pets I create illustrative and distinctive home and stationery products. Made in the UK, my bold and artistically designed animal inspired gifts are sold across the globe. My illustrative designs adorn a range of stationery products such as weekly planners, note cards and magnetic to-do lists as well as homeware gifts ranging from dish towels to aprons, bone china mugs and canvas shopper bags.

Doodle Moo - The Creative Planner

Doodlemoo is the creative mix of an illustrator-graphic designer (with an MA from Central St Martins) and a fine artist-illustrator with a passion for typography and all things designery. Emily grew up in South America exploring beaches, swimming with jellyfish and enjoying the sun. Chris was raised in the English woods, watching bunnies jump and playing in the rain.

The Scent Coven - wax melts for the oil burner

The Scent Coven exists for the modern day witch, a homeware enthusiast with an alternative style. First established in Derbyshire “the dead centre of England” in 2019, Coven owner Jess fell in love with perfume and was inspired to create products more in tune with her personal style and ideology. The Coven strives to build community, a collective of individuals who are not bound by societal rules, where spirit and mind roams free. We always strive to celebrate uniqueness and every product throughout the Coven is carefully crafted with quality in mind. Innovation is at the heart of what we do, candle making has been around for centuries and we are always looking for ways to breathe new life into wax, making decorative products that add not just fragrance, but artistry to your home.

Also included is an oil burner for the wax melts (please be safe with fire) and a NAKD bar. We've chosen foods which are gluten-free and dairy-free.
